This is the DNA sequence of this week’s DNA trait from our partner Fitness Genes. In case you are not sure what this information above tells you, consider reading the rest of this blogpost.

So, it is IGF-1 (Insulin-like growth factor I)It is a little bit like Insulin, but it’s not Insulin.

Let me explain what the IGF-1 value is

IGF-1 is an anabolic hormone, that promotes the growth of muscle, bone and other tissue. It also plays a role in ageing, as it promotes cell growth and division. As if this is not enough, it also influences the function and sensitivity of our body to insulin and therefore plays a role in the regulation of fat and sugar metabolism.

We can see, it is a very essential hormone with a lot of different functions.

75% of your bodies IGF-1 production is done by the liver and this process is triggered by the release of Human Growth Hormones. HGH is produced in the brain as a reaction to exercise, sleep and food intake.

Fitness Genes is looking into your DNA in order to understand how likely your body is producing high or low levels of IGF-1. High levels are associated with increased maximal force output and muscle building potential as well as premature ageing.

If you read my highly scientific explanation of IGF-1 carefully, you know that you cannot really change your IGF-1 levels directly. First you need to alter your HGH levels. This can be done through nutrition, exercise, sleep,…

This is were we as Spokes Coaches come in and help you. Depending on your results we can make changes in your training and diet. This indirectly increases or lowers your IGF-1. While for most athletes it is desirable to get a high IGF-1, only the Fitness Genes DNA Analysis can tell whether that is an issue for you.

Your Spokes Coach can then decide, if increasing your IGF-1 should be a high priority in your training and dietary program. This can be done through various approaches depending on your other DNA results as well as your physiology.

One example: Low body fat increases HGH and therefore your IGF-1. Now if your body fat is already super low, your coach will probably not ask you get on a on a very calorie restricted diet to lower it further. He might consider to prescribe different workouts, which show to increase your IGF-1.
